every tie i read your substack, i find my mind engaged in delicious wondering. thank you! i want to see the prayer rug, i want to feel the materials of the large installation, and...mostly...i want to talk with the keepers of the space. i've always wanted to write about those folks...i'm so glad that you did. thank you!

I love talking to the guards when I go to museums, for exactly these reasons. The personal relationships these museum workers develop with artworks over time is very special, and I would love to see that celebrated and honored more—specifically, in how we compensate their labor and knowledge. As Ariana Jacob noted recently on Twitter, despite the BMA's exhibition curated by security staff, the museum is also trying to prevent their workers from unionizing.
